Project Overview

The City of Willmar hired Marcus Construction to build three projects funded by local option sales tax: the Events and Recreation Center, the turf fields at the Civic Center, and Swansson Fields. The Events and Recreation Center is a 25,000-square-foot facility that was attached to the existing Civic Center and included two large courts that can be used for pickleball, tennis, basketball, volleyball and a variety of floor events. One of the unique features of the gymnasium is tall, translucent windows atop four to five feet of clear, tempered glass that line the southeastern wall. Lining the opposite wall are glass-paned garage doors that open into a long, wide hallway that extends the length of the gymnasium. Other amenities include a catering kitchen, indoor playground, meeting rooms, dressing rooms, storage areas for equipment used for youth programming and an updated and expanded lobby for the Civic Center.

The recreation fields project is located directly south of the Civic Center and included the construction of new pinwheel grass softball fields completed with irrigation and field drainage. A concessions building was constructed in the center of the complex. North of the Civic Center, two new synthetic turf fields were constructed and new Musco lighting was added to both fields. Retention ponds were added as each field was built with multiple layers of drainage ensuring field conditions are maintained. The Swansson Fields project included reworking two existing ballfields including replacing the infield with synthetic turf, irrigation, drainage, masonry dugouts, a concession building, synthetic turf infield, and a new grandstand with protective netting.
